University Policy Statement for Electronic Transmission of Messages

Developed by the Task Force on Electronic Communications, December 2000  

GUIDING PRINCIPLE: The University is committed to the use of broad-based electronic communication to improve the efficiency of information exchange and to reduce environmental (paper) waste in communication activities.

DEFINITION CRITERIA:

  • Broad-based electronic communications include postings to voluntary and involuntary lists.

  • Postings to voluntary lists fall within a broadly defined set of criteria and will be directed to all University personnel choosing to subscribe to such lists.

  • Postings to involuntary lists must fall within the following narrowly defined set of criteria:

  • messages concerning emergency, health and safety;

  • messages pertaining to matters of university-wide policy; and,

  • messages of a timely nature having direct impact on large numbers of one or all of the following groups: University faculty, staff and students.

PROCEDURES FOR TRANSMITTING ELECTRONIC MESSAGES:

  • Messages submitted for transmission to an involuntary list will be reviewed for adherence to the criteria listed above.  The review will be conducted by a group of list moderators. To be accepted for posting, messages should adhere to the General Formatting Guidelines .

  • Messages not accepted for posting to the involuntary list may be posted to a voluntary list. Note: To obtain a list of all discussion lists defined on UConnVM, send the LISTS command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UCONN.EDU.
