Dear CEIN Students,
I hope that this email finds each of you doing well and staying healthy. As you prepare to finish your first four weeks of the summer session, planning, and scheduling for your maternity and pediatric courses have been well underway for several weeks. You recently received your maternity and pediatric clinical groups from Susan Virkler. She has worked hard to distribute as many of the available clinical placement among you as possible. Unfortunately, not all of our agencies were able to accept student groups for this summer, and this has impacted our program and others across our state.
Leadership in the School of Nursing has been in regular communication with several clinical entities for other possible clinical opportunities. As you recall, Dean Chyun was working with the CT Department of Health to help organize an opportunity for our students to participate in contact tracing. Things have not progressed as quickly in these areas as we had hoped, but she will update us if things change.
During the past several weeks, I have had many meetings with our clinical partners at UConn Health, the Ambulatory Outpatient centers, and our School of Dental Medicine clinics to plan for opportunities that include our students. These opportunities involve screening clients across the lifespan and checking temperatures before a scheduled appointment. There are numerous details and processes required when planning these opportunities. At the moment, our partners are working through further details at their end and will be in touch with us once they have a plan in place.
As we had announced earlier in the spring, the Board of Examiners for Nursing has only approved the CT Nursing programs to substitute up to 50% of their overall program clinical hours with alternative, virtual, or high fidelity simulation activities. Because of this limitation, I encourage you all to take advantage of as many opportunities for in-person clinical when they arise. We anticipate and have started to hear from some of our agencies that are not accepting students this summer that they will by September.
I am offering virtual office hours tomorrow, June 5, from 4:00 - 5:00 pm for anyone who would like to join me. You may use the link below or one of the other two option to enter:
