Good morning all;

For those interested in the processes to characterize polymers in marine
debris, or to learn about ways to repurpose them and to create more of a
circular economy for plastics, the short courses described in the
attachment might be of interest. Several groups in Hawaii are heavily
active in the issue, largely because of their proximity to the Great
Pacific Garbage Patch, and what it means for their shores and nearshore
resources. Characterizing polymers is a big part of the issue; one of
the first steps toward finding efficient ways to deal with the
materials, and then to find uses for them.

As an example - and if you want a little inspiration for your day -
check out https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pmdphawaii.org%2F&data=05%7C02%7CECSGA-L%40listserv.uconn.edu%7C2e45c577be714a10cd2208dce2275f11%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C638633906023794011%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=y4cBrfh7pmje0W5mEt3BDwg6doyQ4%2FG2q%2Fva80aafhI%3D&reserved=0. Their work not only removes
marine debris from sensitive and flat-out beautiful marine environments,
but it really facilitates critical steps in characterizing and re-using
the materials, and perhaps even more importantly; it leads toward
documenting where the gear originated from, and toward policies (think
carrots and sticks here) that could reduce the problem.

Anyway...have a look at the flyer; I'll hope you find it of interest.
Dana
