Many thanks to everyone who participated in and attended the Disability Rights Roundtable. The Roundtable included important legal training and moving presentations by those who apply the law and those who face discrimination based on their or their children's health condition. Attorneys from the Justice Department and from the Department of Health and Human Services presented important information on the laws that protect people with medical conditions. Advocates and families gave courageous and moving accounts of the discrimination and barriers that they face simply because of their disabilities.
Given the large number of people from all over the State who attended the Roundtable, given the need for information regarding invoking the protections of the American's with Disabilities Act, and given the ongoing discrimination that exists, the Center for Children's Advocacy in conjunction with the Justice Department would like to form a Community Working Group. The function of this Working Group would be to 1) focus on the issues confronting children and families facing discrimination based on their medical condition and 2) identify how best reach out to the community so that they can be educated around how to confront discriminatory practices.
Please let me know if you are interested in participating in such a Working Group. Also, if you know of, or work with, young people who would like to be part of this Working Group please pass the information along - our young people are an obvious and important voice in discussions around treatment of youth with disabilities.
If you are interested in viewing the Roundtable of November 12, 2104, it was taped on CT-N and the link is attached.
Best wishes for a wonderful Thanksgiving.
