Description:
Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (MVPC) seeks a qualified professional for the position of GIS Technician.  Working within the GIS Program, the selected candidate will focus on integrating GIS and technical skills into a planning environment.   The successful candidate will deliver professional planning and technical expertise through services such as creation of maps, spatial analysis, and data development and interpretation.

Required Education & Experience:
The qualified candidate will possess a thorough understanding of GIS concepts, knowledge of relational databases, and demonstrated proficiency using ArcGIS (version 10.5 preferred).  
• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography or other relevant field with coursework in Geographic Information Systems plus 2 years experience is desired.
• Strong organizational and file management skills, a positive attitude, and ability to multi-task.
• Able to commute daily to and work from MVPC’s office in Haverhill, MA.
• Able to communicate information and instructions clearly - verbally and in writing.

Primary Responsibilities:
Provide GIS mapping, spatial analysis, data development and interpretation, and technical support services for local and regional planning activities.
•  GIS layer maintenance: Digitize mapping information to update and maintain mapping layers; verify digitized data for accuracy, interpret detailed plans, photographs, maps and legal descriptions to update GIS layers, GIS data and map products.
• Perform spatial analysis and data manipulation to generate maps and reports.

Additional Desired Experience:
Candidates with additional skills in the areas listed below are highly desirable.
• Design, create, maintain, and automate map products and writes scripts for automation of tasks (particular focus on Python scripting is helpful)
• Helps maintain and develop web-based products including ArcGIS Online, web maps and web applications.
• Provides web development support using Wordpress and HTML5 and has familiarity with web architecture such as cascading style sheets (CSS).
