Clark University
Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geographic Information Science

Clark University’s Department of International Development, Community, and Environment (IDCE) seeks a scholar with expertise in GIScience, particularly programming, web mapping and spatial database development, for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position starting August 2019. While candidates must have very strong technical GIS skills, as a center of translational research IDCE also expects a record of employing GIS in practical applications that complement and extend one or more of IDCE’s focal areas (for information, see https://www.clarku.edu/academics/departments-and-schools/international-development-community-environment/transdisciplinary-curriculum).

A doctoral degree is required at the time of appointment. Evidence of the capacity for research excellence and outstanding teaching and advising are required. Major responsibilities will include teaching core technical courses in GIS (programming for GIS, web mapping, and spatial database development), developing applied GIS course(s) in the successful candidate’s area(s)of focus, and advising students in Clark’s Master of Science program in GIS (https://www.clarku.edu/programs/masters-geographic-information-science-development-and-environment).

Integrative, community centered research is a hallmark of Clark University. IDCE presents exciting opportunities to work closely with scholars and practitioners affiliated with diverse academic departments and research institutes, in particular Clark’s renowned Graduate School of Geography, Clark Labs, and the George Perkins Marsh Institute, as well as with communities on the frontlines of pressing social and environmental issues.

Qualified candidates should send a CV and a cover letter detailing their professional, research and teaching interests and experience, together with contact information for three references, to Yelena Ogneva-Himmelberger, Chair of the Search Committee, at [log in to unmask] Review and evaluation of applications begins on October 1st, 2018.

Clark University embraces equal opportunity and affirmative action as core values: we believe that cultivating an environment that embraces and promotes diversity is fundamental to the success of our students, our employees and our community. This commitment applies to every aspect of education, services, and employment policies and practices at Clark. Our commitment to diversity informs our efforts in recruitment, hiring and retention. All positions at Clark share in the responsibility for building a community that values diversity and the uniqueness of others by exhibiting integrity and respect in interacting with all members of the Clark community to create an atmosphere of fairness and belonging. We strongly encourage members from historically underrepresented communities, inclusive of all women, to apply.
