Dear CEIN Students,
I hope that all of you are staying well as we navigate the Covid-19 pandemic safely and adjust to virtual learning. We recognize that this sudden change in teaching and learning has required quite an adjustment for everyone. Last week, the School of Nursing emailed an announcement to communicate a pass/fail grading option for our undergraduate programs this semester (Spring 2020 only). The University Registrar's chose the May 1 deadline because it is the last day of the regular academic semester and before the final exam week. The last day of the CEIN academic semester is April 25, and final exams for NURS 4300 and NURS 4304 are scheduled before the last day of your semester and not after as in the regular academic calendar.
The Registrar's office has informed us that any student in the CEIN program who chooses to convert a weighted letter grade to a P or and F on their transcript, must submit the Form to request a pass/fail grade<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fregistrar.uconn.edu%2Fpass-fail-spring-2020%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C123c86c544e04179bc5c08d7dbd39af9%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C637219574184011196&sdata=IsPjvwiQsyjlyaibIr%2BbSmx65TYs4lS48SjrCfQQ7nY%3D&reserved=0> to the Registrar's office before taking the respective course final exam.
The CEIN faculty and I strongly recommend that you consider the following implications before opting for a Pass/Fail grade in either course this semester. Historically, faculty have found that students who earn a letter grade lower than a 'C' in a CEIN course often have much difficulty in subsequent courses and semesters and may require the student to withdraw from the program.
1. If a course is placed on pass/fail, you would still complete the course. It is graded in the usual way by the instructor, and the instructor submits a letter grade. The letter grade is translated into a 'P' ('D minus' or above) or an 'F' on your transcript. A course taken on Pass/Fail is not included in the computation of the semester or cumulative GPA, but a grade below 'C' makes the student ineligible for the Dean's List.
2. A Pass/Fail grade on a transcript will not prevent you from graduating or applying for licensure. Degree conferral is what is required to apply for licensure.
3. If you are considering graduate school and chose to select a Pass/Fail on your transcript, we cannot guarantee how your transcript will be reviewed by prospective graduate program admissions committees.
4. The 'Pass/Fail' grade will not be an option for CEIN courses in subsequent semesters.
5. Once a grade has been converted to a Pass/Fail it is irrevocable.
If you have any questions about this pass/fail option please discuss them with you academic advisor. I wish you all success in your final two and a half weeks of the spring semester. Please stay safe and healthy during this pandemic.
Additional information will follow about our summer course and clinical schedules. If you have not yet registered for summer courses, please do so before the end of April.
