Good morning everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know about an issue when using ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 and 10.2 on Microsoft’s new Windows 8.1. There appears to be a compatibility issue which causes an error.

The Issue:

It seems that when running ArcGIS for Desktop 10.1 or 10.2 when you close ArcMap this causes an application error every time. This is only a minor annoyance as it does not stop you from working or saving. Slightly more troublesome is that it also seems to happen when you Geocode though not always. It is random but does seem to happen after it has completed the process. Also editing the map may randomly causes the application error and shut down. These problems only seem to occur with ArcMap. ArcCatalog appears to be fine.

Esri Recommended Fix:

Downgrade back to Windows 8. Esri does not officially support Windows 8.1 so they recommend reverting back to Windows 8 or not installing 8.1.

Other suggested fixes:

Run ArcMap in Windows 7 or 8 compatibility mode. This has worked for some but not all. Several also suggest running ArcMap as an Administrator. I have not had a chance to try either of these options personally.

Esri is aware of this issue (http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/41769) so I assume they are working on a better fix than having to revert back to an older version of Windows. Windows 8.1 is picking up steam, being installed more than Windows 8 though still nowhere close to Windows 7 and XP.
