1.  Introduction to GIS

Dates: March 10 - 12, 2014; 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Registration Fee: $750

Summary: This three-day hands-on computer course provides an introduction to the capabilities of GIS. Using ESRI's ArcGIS 10.1 ®, software, we teach the fundamentals of working with GIS data, how to query a GIS database, edit spatial and attribute data and how to present data using maps, reports, and graphs. We also work extensively with the Rhode Island Geographic Information System (RIGIS) database.

All students receive hands-on software instruction, course books with exercises with accompanying training data. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a URI Certificate of Course Completion. Classes are taught at URI’s Kingston campus.

Requirements: Participants should be comfortable working in a windows environment. Please visit ESRI's training website and try this free course on Getting Started with GIS (for ArcGIS 10) This will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the topics that will be covered in the three-day course.

Topics Covered:

  • Geospatial data types: storage and management
  • Introduction to the ArcMap interface: toolbars, pop-up / drop-down menu
  • How to display, symbolize, label geospatial data
  • Using ArcGIS.com basemaps and other internet map services
  • Printing and exporting maps
  • Creating and Editing geospatial data
  • How to perform attribute and spatial queries
  • Creating X,Y location data, spatial analysis (overlay)
  • Accessing the RIGIS data catalog

2.  Working with ArcGIS Online: Maps and Geographic Data on the Web

Dates: March 13, 2014; 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Registration Fee : $100

Summary: This is a half-day training program that will introduce you to ESRI's FREE online mapping applications available at ArcGIS.com and give you the tools to access the volumes of data being served from RIGIS which are easily accessbile in this interface.

  • Explore ready to use map services from RIGIS and others (hundreds of maps!)
  • Query existing data
  • Build your own maps using readily available data from RIGIS and other sources
  • Create your own data (import: .csv, .txt, addresses, .gpx, heads-up digitizing)
  • Share your maps via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter or embed the code into your own website

ArcGIS Onlineservices developed by ESRI® that allow users to upload, download, and create data. Users may choose to make their map data public or limit access by using groups.

Requirements: This course is intended for those interested in working with geographic data and requires only a modest level of technical skill. No prior GIS knowledge is necessary!

Participants will:

  • Create a customized ArcGIS Online map
  • Become comfortable with the ArcGIS.com interface
  • Learn to access the RIGIS ArcGIS Server maps
  • Use tools to create layers on your custom map
  • Import .csv files with location data (x,y, address) on to map
  • Import Shapefiles on to an ArcGIS.com map
  • Learn how to share a map via email, Facebook, Twitter or by embedding it into own website.
