English as a Second Language Writing Workshop:

Writing Introductions to Journal Articles

This two-hour English as a second language workshop will focus on the organization of a research paper. The organization of the U.S. academic prose typically follows predictable sequences, which is what distinguishes it from textual organization in many other cultures. Through a number of interactive activities, we will discuss the basic structure of research articles in engineering, (social) sciences, and humanities at both textual and paragraph levels. We will then learn which particular moves are necessary for a well-organized introduction to a journal article. Finally, we will discuss major grammar issues (e.g., tense choice) and vocabulary needed for an effective introduction. Graduate students from all disciplines are welcome (with or without their current writing projects).
