ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE WORKSHOP:
ABSTRACT WRITING
This two-hour English as a second language (ESL) workshop is designed to help non-native speakers of English improve their abstract writing skills. Abstracts in the English research world have become an increasingly important part of a research article, conference
paper/presentation, doctoral dissertation, and master’s thesis. The quality of an abstract may determine whether or not the reader chooses to read the paper further. In this workshop, we will discuss some fundamental moves necessary for drafting a good quality
abstract. We will also address ESL grammar issues, such as tense choice, which can be particularly challenging for East Asian speakers. Finally, we will practice how to create an effective title for a research paper. Graduate students from all disciplines
are welcome.
