English as a Second Language Writing Workshop: English Articles a, an, and the in Academic Writing—Issues and Strategies

This two-hour English as a second language workshop will focus on the English articles a, an, and the (e.g., a study, an approach, the study). Second language (L2) English articles represent one of the most challenging grammar issues during the course of L2 English acquisition, including L2 writing development. This is partly due to transfer from a student’s native/first language, whose grammar system may lack articles (e.g., Chinese, Korean, Russian). In addition, many languages with articles use them quite differently from English (e.g., Arabic, Spanish). Through a series of steps and interactive activities, we will raise the awareness of self-editing with respect to this persistent grammar mistake in L2 student writing. Open to all UConn students.
