State Child Advocate, CT Coalition Against Domestic Violence to Host Roundtable

Discussion to focus on the impact of domestic violence on children and opportunities for improved system responses

Following two recent domestic violence homicides with children present at the scene, Connecticut's Office of the Child Advocate (OCA) and CT Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) will host a roundtable discussion on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 1:00pm at the Legislative Office Building, Room 1D. The roundtable discussion will focus on the impact of domestic violence on children and opportunities to coordinate and improve system responses.

Earlier this spring Connecticut experienced the tragic deaths of two young mothers, both with children present in the home at the time they were murdered by their husbands - Lori Gellatly, killed on May 7, 2014 in Oxford and Kyla Ryng, killed on June 4, 2014 in Bristol. In response, advocates, lawmakers and experts will gather to discuss:

1) Barriers to interagency/intersystem communication when serving children and families experiencing domestic violence

2) Critical services needed to support children and families experiencing domestic violence and ensuring that those services are driven by best practices

3) Opportunities for interagency/intersystem collaboration as we build the support system for families experiencing domestic violence

4) Talking to children about violence and healthy relationships so that we may help prevent future domestic violence
