Hi all,

The City of Bangor is hiring a GIS/GPS Technician to help locate and map the City’s electrical infrastructure.  We anticipate that this will be a 6-month position and will have a flexible schedule.  Ideally the candidate would have experience with either GIS/GPS or electrical systems; preferably both.  The advertisement and full position description are below.

ELECTRICAL MAPPING TECHNICIAN

The City of Bangor Public Works Department is seeking a qualified individual to fill the temporary position of electrical mapping technician. The electrical mapping technician will work with electrical staff and the GIS Administrator to gather information in the field and enter the location of city electrical lines into the city GIS system. This position is anticipated to last for less than six (6) months, have flexible hours and be ideal for a student in the Electrical/GIS field. Pay is $11.00-$14.00 per hour depending on qualifications and experience.

ELECTRICAL MAPPING TECHNICIAN

The City of Bangor’s Electrical Mapping Technician utilizes GPS and GIS technologies to map the city’s electrical system.  Employee in this classification will locate features in the field, input data for the located features, and upload data into the City’s GIS mapping system. In addition to locating features in the field, employee will work in the office to adjust, correct, convert and manage digital data as necessary.  Additionally, employee will create hardcopy map products to assist in data capture, and to aid division staff in their duties.

 

DUTIES:

·        Collects field data using the City’s mapping-grade GPS. Post-processes data and integrates data into city’s GIS geodatabase.

·        Uses ArcGIS software to edit collected data, and continually maintain and improve electrical system data. 

·        Interprets historic plans and documents to map and attribute electrical system features.

·        Applies quality control procedures to collected data to ensure data consistency. 

·        Prepares maps, reports, and other GIS-based products for use by other City personnel. 

·        Assists division staff in their day-to-day use of GIS software and data.

·        Performs related duties as assigned.

 

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

·        Strong familiarity with electrical system features and operation.  Ability to read electrical plans and technical drawings accurately.

·        Experience with data collection GPS, particularly mapping-grade Trimble units, Terrasync data collection software, and Pathfinder Office post-processing software.

·        Experience with ArcGIS Desktop software, specifically in the areas of data management and feature editing.

·        Ability to independently troubleshoot basic software issues, and solve larger software problems with minimal reliance on other staff.

·        Ability to be self-directed in accomplishing tasks, manage long-term projects, and meet deadlines.

·        Ability to deal with co-workers, other governmental units, and members of the general public in a courteous, effective manner.

·        Strong communication, interpersonal, analytical, and organizational skills.

·        Light lifting and carrying of normal work equipment and materials.  Ability to traverse steep or uneven terrain in field data collection.  

·        Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle.

 

RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent works under the overall supervision of the Director of Public Works, and works directly with Electrical Division staff and the GIS Administrator. Incumbent maintains frequent contact with superiors and co-workers both within the Department and elsewhere in the City organization, and occasionally communicates with other governmental agencies, utility companies, and the general public.
