Summary and Background:
From the Bengal famine of 1943 to the severely under-reported Food Riots of 2008, Thook is comprised of four short stories bound by a single theme. Using dark comedy, satire and documentary styles, the play engages the economics of day-to-day life and delves into the psychological distress caused by chronic hunger. The play will be presented in both Hindi and English and will be accompanied by supertitles.

Thook was originally commissioned by ShauSpielHaus, Hamburg, Germany as part of Hunger for Trade, an international theater network with companies from Belgium, Brazil, Burkina Faso, England, Germany, India, Romania, South Africa and Switzerland, which was established to explore the problems and perspectives of the global food market. The play has already become a critical success in India. The Hindu review says, "The power of theatre was revealed in Thook." Sourav Roy calls Thook "one of the best plays of modern times."From the Bengal famine of 1943 to the severely under-reported Food Riots of 2008, the play is comprised of four short stories bound by a single theme.
