I have been dealing with this for about 20 years.
Equipment cost replacement is recommended.
The cost of the insurance for a company, partnership or individual will vary by entity type is going to be dependent on two concerns:
errors/omissions and liability..

These are going to depend on the work being done, where you are doing and for who.  Something where your input may put property or a person in jeopardy will cost more.
When we did training contracts at State and County levals we were also required to carry car insurance - this we understood if we were paid to drive to teach a class in Phoenix from Tucson or were driving onto State property.
Hard to understand why we would need it if we flew across the country and could take a taxi to training location.

If anyone wants to discuss further you may give me a call or just drop an email back to me and not the list.
I will be at NEARC with LizardTech (booth) in October as well.
Regards,
Bill

Subject: GIS Insurance???

I was asked an interesting question the other day. How much should insurance cost for GIS professionals. People working for large companies or in the public sector probably don’t have to worry about this but what about free-lance professionals how do they deal with this.

Has anyone purchased a policy for GIS liability in the insurance market? What was the experience like and do you have any recommendations for a good insurance company that knows and understands GIS?
