Subject: Why attend NEARC? 3 Good Reasons

Hi there,

As I am working on the presentation I will give as part of our hands-on workshop about data management for Facilities GIS at NEARC next week, it occurs to me that you may be on the fence about whether or not to attend Fall NEARC this year.  Or perhaps you are considering whether or not you will authorize some of your staff to attend.  For what it’s worth, please let me share with you some of the reasons that I have personally been attending NEARC faithfully for the past 15 years or so:

1.       Hear Esri’s vision directly from the visionaries.  As the person in my organization responsible for setting the vision and direction of our products and for advising our customers about Facilities GIS, it is critical that I have a clear understanding of Esri’s vision and direction.  Each year Esri delivers a keynote to describe where they see the industry heading and how they intend to help their customers continue to do awesome work.  This year, the Esri keynote will be delivered by Bernie Szukalski – one of my favorite presenters EVER.  If you have never seen Bernie present you owe it to yourself to come to NEARC this fall for that opportunity alone.  If you have seen Bernie before, then you have obviously already signed up.  This is also your opportunity to make your voice directly heard by Esri Redlands.  Speak up!  I know that Bernie, for one, will be listening.

2.       Sharpen my technical skills.  I always have a list of hands-on questions going and I find there is no better place short of Redlands to get them answered than the Doctor’s Office at NEARC.  I make a point to seek out Mark Scott and Sam Berg from the Danvers office with my questions about how I can resolve specific problems.  At Spring NEARC, I spent about an hour with Patrick Gahagan from the NYC office and learned a TON.  There are few opportunities in the course of the year that I have such direct access to the best and brightest from Esri.  Fall NEARC is one of them and certainly the most cost effective one.

3.       Broaden my network.  PenBay Solutions is a vendor and Esri Business Partner.  We cannot be successful unless we enable more and different customers to become successful with Facilities GIS with Esri and our InVision products together.  The relationships that are built and maintained through NEARC often lead to business.  (If you are a vendor and don’t have a booth at Fall NEARC, you should strongly consider it.  It certainly is valuable to us.)  Beyond the business aspect, there are relationships that are formed at NEARC that simply help to enable our communities to leave the world a little better than we found it.  I have witnessed too many instances of “users helping users” on this very list serve to doubt that our small community has an impact on the world at large.

I hope that you and your staff will attend NEARC next week in Mystic.  I know that the host committee has done an awesome job in getting ready for your arrival.  I hope you will attend our workshop on Wednesday morning.  We are working very hard to make it worth your while.  If for some reason you can’t attend this year, please make sure it is in your budget to join us next fall in beautiful Burlington, VT.

Safe travels!

Stu Rich, CTO
