The State of Connecticut, including the University of Connecticut, is anticipating the arrival of a severe winter storm on Monday, January 26  and Tuesday, January 27.   This storm has the potential to be very dangerous to citizens of this state.  Roads blocked with snow and loss of electricity are anticipated.  Power lines could be down for a number of days, impacting the availability of routine utilities and resources.

Steps to take prior to an impending weather related emergency

  1. Enroll your cell phone in the UConn Emergency Alert Text Message www.alert.uconn.edu if you have changed cell phone numbers after a prior enrollment, you must re-enroll your new number into the system.   Keep a list of important phone numbers.  If the university is closed and classes are canceled, students will be notified via www.alert.uconn.edu
  2. Make sure you fill your bath tub with plenty of water. If you do not have a bath tub, fill every pot, pan, bucket or container full of water. In addition, buy a case of bottled water for drinking. Loss of power means you may not have access to running water to clean yourself or flush the toilets.
  3. Stock up with a lot of food that does not require cooking, such as: granola bars, cereals, breads, fruits and vegetables. Wash fruits and vegetables before you store them. Buy canned foods, freeze-dried or dehydrated foods. Buy a manual can opener.  If you have small children, get enough diapers and formula for a week.  Make sure that you have enough of your medicines.
  4. The day before the expected weather event, lower the temperature of your refrigerator and freezer and try not to open the refrigerator.
  5. Purchase candles and extra batteries for radios and flashlights.
  6. Do not burn charcoal briquettes or gas grills inside your home or apartment due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning!  Do not heat your home with your kitchen stove.  This can cause deadly air poisoning.
  7. Fill the gas tank in your car.
  8. Withdraw cash from the bank or an ATM machine before the storm arrives, as you do not know how long it will take to restore the electricity. No electricity means that you cannot use the ATM or a credit card at a store.  Withdraw sufficient funds to cover one week’s worth of expenses.
  9. Make sure you have a battery operated radio to listen to weather announcements.
  10. Charge your computer and cell phone before the storm arrives.

                  Very Important Information to Remember

  1. Please make photocopies of all your immigration and other legal documents and records, and keep the original documents in a safe place.  These documents include, but are not limited to: passport, I-94, I-20s or DS-2019s (current and previous ones), any employment authorization paperwork, tax returns, etc.  In the event that a natural disaster destroys your belongings, these documents are very difficult, sometimes impossible, to replace.  It is your responsibility to keep your important documents in a safe and secure place.
  2. If a situation requires you to evacuate the area, take your immigration documents with you.
  3.  If the University is shut down and you are asked to leave this area, it is critical that you notify ISSS of your whereabouts.  The University Alert Notification System provides a number of ways in which the University may contact the community in the event of an emergency through the website, text messages, email, outdoor sirens and Code Blue Phone Kiosks.
