My first job was working for NYC DEP.  I had complete access to the NY Public Libraries Map Collection, which we utilized on many projects.  I know that there are many things you could visit when going to NYC, but I recommend a visit to the Public Library and then the Map Division for not only a history lesson on the development of NYC, but of the world.  It goes without saying, the map collection there is really fantastic.  I just was looking at their website and now they have many historical maps available online.  A real treasure.

Subject: [CTGIS-L] Great article about New York City libraries

It’s not GIS but it’s darn interesting

“The city’s libraries — the fusty old buildings, and a few spiffier modern ones, planted in all five boroughs — had 37 million visitors in the last fiscal year... the city’s libraries have more users than major professional sports, performing arts, museums, gardens and zoos — combined.”
