This is nothing new.  In early 2001, the bottom fell out of the technology job market and many left their careers permanently.
The workforce in the USA is struggling to survive and  IT workers were the "canary in the coal mine"  when they were the first to be displaced by H1B  visa holders from other countries.
This is the Government allowing a employers the lowest wage (as close to zero pay)  employees possible and the citizens have allowed this to ruin the lives of millions of Americans and their families.
There is absolutely no interest in the Human Rights on the US citizen and their interest in earn a living and surviving.

Hey all,
I would really prefer not to be this person but I don't understand these internships.  Massachusetts wage law (as well as the federal government and all other states) clearly states that these internships are illegal.  
To start, the federal Fair Labor and Standards Act, 29 USC Section 201 states all persons working for a company must be compensated unless they meet all six of the below exemptions:
The internship is similar to that of what would occur in an employee-training program; 
The internship is for the benefit of the intern; 
The intern does not work in place of regular employees; 
The employer does not immediately benefit from the services of the intern; 
The intern is not immediately entitled to a position in the company at the conclusion of the internship; and 
Both the employer and intern are in agreement that wages for the internship will not be paid. 
Massachusetts expands further upon this with the Minimum Fair Wage Law and Regulations, requiring all persons to be paid unless they meet one of the following standards:
Professional service; 
Agricultural and farm work; 
Work by persons being rehabilitated or trained under rehabilitation or training programs in charitable, educational or religious institutions; 
Work by members of religious orders; or 
Outside sales work regularly performed by outside salesmen who regularly sell a product or products away from their employer’s place of business and who do not make daily reports or visits to the office or plant of their employer.  (M.G.L. c. 151, § 2). 
  * Note professional service has been upheld by MA courts to indicate advanced knowledge not found in college interns

I'd appreciate the communities feedback on this.  This is a slippery slope we are seeing many employers take in a multitude of sectors.  I'm not sure if it is willful disregard of the laws to exploit free labor or being ignorant of the laws.

Cape Cod Commission GIS Intern
The Intern is responsible for supporting Cape Cod Commission staff with day-to-day GIS analysis and cartography needs.  Opportunities to assist with the maintenance of Cape Cod Commission
GIS environment and gain exposure to spatial application development are possible.
Principal Responsibilities
·       
Provide GIS analysis to support all aspects of a regional planning agency.
·       
Create, organize, manage and archive GIS data produced by Cape Cod Commission and outside consultants in a large and complex data storage structure.
·       
Update data and symbology in a multi-tiered server environment.
 
Qualifications
·       
Currently enrolled in an accredited four-year college.
·       
Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or other related field.
·       
Strong working knowledge of ESRI’s suite of GIS software, including ArcGIS (desktop and online), ArcCatalog, Spatial Analyst and Model Builder.
·       
Experience with or knowledge of Enterprise GIS and SQL Server.
·       
Knowledgeable with GIS data sources, methods for data acquisition, common data projections, and synthesizing multiple data types.
·       
Experience automating geo-processing tasks for repetitive procedures.
·       
Experience analyzing and plotting data in Microsoft Excel and/or Matlab.
·       
Basic understanding of Global Positioning Systems.
·       
Excellent cartography skills and a strong attention to detail.
·       
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
 
This is an unpaid position.  A stipend may be available.
