General Job Description
Land Surveyor includes classes of Licensed Land Surveyors who perform or review land surveying duties in measuring and locating land, geodetic and cadastral surveys for the location and monumentation of property boundaries, right of way limits, for the platting and planning of land, including the topography, alignment, and grades for roads, and for the preparation and perpetuation of maps, record plats, field note records, and property descriptions that represent these surveys.
Land Surveyor I is the journey level of the Licensed Professional Land Surveyor series. At this level incumbents perform or review land surveying duties in measuring and locating land, site planning, writing surveying scope of services, and map, plat, and field reviews. Incumbents may oversee survey activities or a survey project (which may entail serving as a working leader over non-licensed project staff) and/or review control and boundary surveys of various projects.
Land Surveyors I apply theories, principles, and practices of professional (licensed) land surveying. The work requires licensure as a Licensed Land Surveyor in accordance with 26 V.S.A Ch. 45.
Land Surveyors I perform or review difficult and complex survey assignments where license as a Land Surveyor is required. Incumbents may be responsible for legal professional approval of surveys, stamping documents with the incumbent's professional seal, and/or may lead activities of a group of technical and non-licensed personnel. Land Surveyors I usually function as project coordinators (i.e., having responsibility for a project) and working leaders over non-licensed land surveying staff. Incumbents give final approval to assignments that deal with reliable data or are not controversial and provide preliminary and final review recommendations for approval or rejection for non-reliable data or controversial surveys. Work is reviewed periodically to ensure conformance to policies and procedures and to measure results.
Land Surveyor I is distinguished from the Land Survey Specialist II by the latter's responsibility for applying land survey principles and knowledge in situations where data is less reliable, independent selection of survey standards, techniques, methods, and criteria is required, adaptation of contract specifications may be necessary, and licensure as a Land Surveyor is not required
Land Surveyor I is distinguished from the Land Surveyor II by the latter's responsibility as a highly specialized expert for program issues or a working supervisor of one or more Land Surveyors I.
