Jennifer,

Peter is correct that your Lat/Lon were reversed in the dialog box, but even so, your geometry should have shown up, which it sounds like they do (just in the wrong place).  In the cases where nothing shows up, I have noticed it has to do with the file name.  Are their spaces, dashes, other odd characters in the original file name?  Also I would make sure you have closed out of your excel program before performing these operations as well.

Jennifer, put longitude for the X field and latitude for the Y.  Then click the “Edit” button in the dialogue and choose Geographic Coordinate System/North America/NAD83.  That should do it.

Subject: [CTGIS-L] Add XY Data frustration

Alright Folks,

I am at a loss.  I have an excel sheet with these columns:

OBJECTID            LAT_DD                LONG_DD

1                            44.10                    -73.52

2                            43.92                    -73.62

3                            41.37                    -74.20

ETC.                      ETC.                      ETC.

I keep getting this (see below) when I try to Add XY Data in ArcMap:

When I just click OK, no matter how I have the fields formatted, what I call OBJECTID, if I switch the XY field, if I switch the negative sign to the other column, I get the same warning, and the points do not show up where they should.  If I manually enter them in, they locate fine.  I have also tried editing a new feature class directly and creating a feature class from the data in ArcCatalog to no avail.  What else can I try?

Thanks,
