Does he have specifics for the resolution he's looking for? We have a some high-resolution scanned maps, both modern and historical. I'd be happy to generate a big file for him from any of our existing projects and put it in a Dropbox.

Dear all,

I realize that this GIS question is not Connecticut focused - but some of you might have suggestions...
I have a colleague that requires access to high-resolution downloadable maps for a sculpture project. He is looking for domestic and international city maps, both historical and modern, that can zoom down to street level, curbside level almost. He eventually needs all city images at the same scale. We can identify sources that show hi-res images online, but then either pixelate when at the highest zoom, don’t zoom in close enough, or else don’t download at the same resolution.

We’ve looked at various websites including: Artstor; Map History/History of Cartography: the Gateway to the Subject; Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection (U of Texas, Austin); David Rumsey Historical Map Collection; Historic Maps of Japan; Mapping History (U of Oregon); Maps of Africa (Northwestern U.); Library of Congress Map Collections; Historic Maps of New England (U. of Connecticut); Maps Online from World History Sources (George Mason University); Digital Public Library of America; Gallica; New York Public Library; British Library.

Occasionally he finds maps that will do what he wants, but it’s painstaking searching for them. I think he’s hoping for a site that will provide ‘one-stop shopping”, but that’s wishful thinking. Any recommendations on anything that we’ve overlooked? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks very much,
