What if the data collected is loaded with no projection information to begin with?

Jennifer,

If the data was collected with a certain projection datum, say NAD 27 for example, and you define the data with NAD83 datum the data will be offset from the correct position by x meters in X direction and x meters in Y direction. The amount of offset will vary depending on where the data was originally collected.

I'm with Jarlath, either a data layer is defined incorrectly, or when you defined a projection it was not the correct projection for the data.

Apologies for the cross-posting…

I'm trying to help out a colleague. He has a map that has data coming in at three different areas even when I've done define projection, reproject, open a clean mxd and define the map projection before loading data, but I am out of ideas. We've gone through a few transformations as well, but y'all know how many of those there are. Can I provide any more information or data (limited) to get some more help?

Thanks,

Jennifer M. Kalasardo
