ENVIRONMENTAL GEOSPATIAL SCIENTIST

Location: Montpelier, VT

Position Summary

Stone Environmental is seeking a talented individual with a background in the physical sciences and solid quantitative skills in GIS/spatial analysis and one or more of the following: computer programming,  database analysis, environmental modeling, or statistical analysis. This person will support environmental and agricultural modeling projects within the Applied Information Management (AIM) group at Stone, a team of diverse, highly motivated environmental scientists, engineers, GIS specialists, and computer software developers. 

Responsibilities

General responsibilities will include:

n Spatial analysis of large datasets to support mathematical modeling in environmental and agricultural sciences

n Computer programming to enable efficient processing of environmental datasets and model customization

n Environmental database compilation and analysis

n Ensuring high quality scientific analysis and project deliverables, including technical reports and presentations

Required Skills

The following skills are required to be considered for this position:

n Spatial analysis using ArcGIS

n Scripting of geoprocessing tasks in ArcGIS using ArcPy

n Proficiency in Python, R, VB.NET or FORTRAN programming

n Relational database data entry and extraction

n Creative thinking and problem solving

n Self-motivation and  keen attention to detail

n Enthusiasm for learning new skills and subjects

n Excellent written and verbal communication skills

n Ability to work as part of a team

Desired Skills

The following skills are beneficial, but are not required for this position:

n Experience performing spatial analysis with large national-level environmental datasets including: NLCD, STATSGO, SSURGO, and NHDplus

n Fluency in relational databases, including PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, or Microsoft Access

n Knowledge of or experience in application of agronomic, hydrologic, or other environmental models

n Knowledge of agronomic practices in the United States and Canada

n Statistical/Probablistic analysis

n Web site development, including mapping applications

Education and Experience

n Bachelor degree or higher in the physical sciences (e.g., agricultural/biological engineering, civil/environmental engineering, water resources, atmospheric science, chemistry, geology, geography, or related environmental/geospatial field). One to two years of post-graduate experience in a GIS or consulting position in a relevant field is required. Advanced degrees may substitute for work experience.
