This is a great opportunity. I have used FME on several past projects myself. It is an extremely powerful tool if you need to convert data to and from multiple formats. As Niels indicated it is the engine that drives the data interoperability extension. Autodesk also licenses parts of it for their conversion tools in Map and Civil 3D. I also believe it what allows those products to connect to SDE and other data formats directly for editing.
