Best Practice Number 1: DO NOT build tiles in ArcGIS Online, unless you want to eat up your credits in a big hurry. If you need to tile a map service, build the tiles with ArcGIS Server. Avoid using Analysis Tools in ArcGIS Online, where possible, as these also use credits to a greater or lesser degree. Geocoding large numbers of addresses should also be avoided- they cost 40 credits per 1000 addresses. Here is a table showing the costs in credits for various operations: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/credits - click on the + sign next to Service Credits By Capability. You can set credit budgets for individual users.
