GIS Technician (contract position)

Background

MassGIS is presently building the statewide GIS needed to support the Next Generation 911 (NG911) emergency response system. The mapping for this project includes Emergency Service Zones, address point locations, and a street network; these are linked to tables including a master list of street names and of addresses and of their respective aliases/variants.

 

Duties

As a member of a small team, you will work on upgrading and maintaining components of a complex master address database in support of Next Generation 911.  All tasks involve editing or otherwise improving the information in a sophisticated, fully relational address data model (emergency service zones, streets, street names, address points, and master address list). Specific duties will involve GIS data editing and also working with existing code and, if you have or can learn the necessary skills, developing new code, either SQL queries or Python programs, to expedite these duties.  Some of this work may involve significant interaction via phone and email with municipal staff. Duties may also involve editing raster data using ArcGIS editing tools.

 

Preferred qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree

- At least one summer or semester-long internship involving full-time experience using ArcGIS software in a professional environment OR at least two semester-long GIS courses

- Experience using ArcGIS for editing both spatial and tabular data

- Logical, efficient, organized, and detail oriented

- Strong oral, written, and inter-personal communication skills

- Evidence of ability to learn new concepts and technologies independently

 

Ideal Background

The ideal candidate will have one or more of the following:

 

-Experience with creating and/or using a multi-table relational database use in a GIS

-Experience creating and applying QA, particularly in developing methodology for new processes

-Experience documenting complex and technical procedures

-Experience working with data models

Knowledge Acquired on the Job

Familiarity with a fully-developed complex relational data model for streets, address points, emergency service zones and related data layers; experience with ArcGIS and SQL queries; NextGen E-911 terminology and GIS data use; familiarity with MassGIS and its database and with state government function and organization.
