Budget Cuts Wipe Out Educational Advocacy Programs For At-Risk Youth

Hartford - ’Judicial officials said Tuesday that budget cuts have wiped out a program that helped hundreds of at-risk teenagers and juvenile offenders return to, or catch up in, school — a service that advocates say was highly effective in keeping kids out of juvenile jail.
 
The educational advocacy work, provided for years by three nonprofit legal centers, was one of a string of community-based programs eliminated in the face of $77 million in cuts to the judicial branch's budget, the officials said. In all, about $14.5 million in programs that diverted adult and juvenile offenders from jail were cut or scaled back... ’
