The National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) operates the U.S. Department of Education's technical assistance and information center for the federal Education for Homeless Children and Youth (EHCY) Program. NCHE is based at The SERVE Center at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). NCHE hosts this moderated Homeless Education Listserv to allow administrators, educators, advocates, and service providers not affiliated with NCHE to share information and ideas on meeting the educational needs of children and youth experiencing homelessness. NCHE also uses this listserv to communicate with the field. The ideas on this listserv do not necessarily reflect the views of NCHE, The SERVE Center, UNCG, or the U.S. Department of Education. Good afternoon, colleagues:
Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Education released its Foster Care Transition Toolkit, a new resource aimed at providing useful supports for foster youth pursuing college and career opportunities. While geared towards foster youth, many of the resources are equally appropriate for homeless youth, as foster and homeless youth often face similar challenges when transitioning to college and career opportunities.
While the toolkit covers a variety of topics, its Securing Housing chapter may be particularly valuable for college students at-risk of or experiencing homelessness. Other chapters include:
