Depending on what you're trying to do, you can use the OpenLayers plugin in QGIS to view Google, Bing, and Yahoo imagery with your data.

Reed,

Great post, I was wondering the same thing,   And while the consensus seems to tout ESRI imagery, in Rhode Island the ESRI world imagery is 2 years out of date, Google Earth is current.  So I anxiously await more current imagery  from ESRI, particularly as there are no plans to refly RI in the near future.

Does anyone have any idea what the Arc2Earth subscription costs annually?

Reed,

If I remember correctly, exporting GE imagery and then georeferencing it into another GIS is against the user agreement and is a copyright violation..

There is a plug in for ArcGIS called Arc2Earth (https://www.arc2earth.com/) that allows you to put GE imagery into Arc. It is a yearly subscription that essentially allows you to license the GE imagery. Only the current GE imagery is accessible from the Arc2Earth servers so you cannot do time line imagery effects.

As mentioned, ESRI background maps > Imagery is similar to GE and avoids the expense associated with Arc2Earth

Cheers,

Dave

Hello,

I have a user inquiring as to whether they could somehow export or capture the great 2015 imagery they see for Vermont in Google Earth, and use this imagery in ArcMap for conservation planning they want to do.

Three questions on whether this is possible:

1.       I recall there were KML or XML files that can be exported from Google Earth, and with the proper tools, converted to imagery of a format suitable for ArcGIS.  Does the imagery lose resolution as you make these changes for Arc compatibility?

2.       Do you have to buy the tools that can do this?

3.       Are there copyright infringement restrictions for taking the imagery out of Google Earth to use in different software instead of G Earth?

I’m looking for an experienced user who knows, and either does this routinely or avoids it because it would be copyright infringement.  Maybe you’re that person!

Thanks,

Reed
