Python has indeed seen a resurgence in usage. At least, if you follow Kaggle competitions <http://us1.campaign-archive1.com/?u=e4c8fb8b43860678deab268e5&id=8ae5b99ce5&e=3963306d5c> . As far as data visualizations go, I can't really say much about Python - But R's data visualizations have always left me frustrated. It has infinite flexibility - and infinite hassle.
