Just a quick reminder for anyone local, that if ever your non-GIS colleagues expressed an interested in establishing some GIS skills or broadening their GIS proficiencies across multiple platforms and have found that online courses aren’t really for them, that Purchase College might be a good fit.  This new evening program is designed around professional work schedules and intended to help folks ramp into geospatial technologies from wherever they currently find themselves in their careers.  Registration is closing soon for this semester, however.

Learning how geospatial technologies work, how they can be managed most efficiently, and how geospatial data can be analyzed to make informed decisions will enable you to work effectively in a geospatial world. The GIS certificate program is designed for professionals who are looking for a geospatial edge in an increasingly global and technological world.

Using Cloud-Based and Online GIS Platforms

Explore cutting-edge GIS websites and a wide range of online mapping. Query rich geospatial data repositories and operate mapping services, which can be integrated and “mashed up” into other GIS software programs. Participants examine and review current federal, state, and local portals providing geospatial content, along with emerging cloud mapping programs, such as ArcGIS Online and open-source alternatives.

Instructor: Sam Wear, assistant CIO of Westchester County Geographic Information Systems, has managed and led the development of the program since 1988. He works extensively with municipal governments throughout the county in building local GIS capacity. His experience also includes a four-year IPA detail with the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Geospatial Program in Reston, Virginia. He is two-time president of the Northeast Arc Users Group and founder of the New York State GIS Association. Wear earned his BS at the University of Idaho and his MS at the University of Vermont.
