ONLINE COURSE IN WEB MAPPING
July 10 to August 19, 2017, ONLINE course through Salem State University
This 6-week, 3-credit summer ONLINE class offers an introduction to the topic of web-based mapping and geographic information systems (GIS). As part of this class, you will learn the design, operation, and maintenance of a basic internet-based GIS built with industry-standard software components. The software packages and applications used in the course are freely available. At the end of the course, you will have a fully functional software stack that can be used to implement your own web mapping / GIS. Python and PostgreSQL/PostGIS will be used throughout the class. Having experience with this language and application will make your course experience that much more enjoyable.
Topics to be covered include:
The HTTP server / client model and using this model for mapping and GIS
The overall organization and operation of a web GIS
OGC web mapping services
JavaScript and its use in web mapping
HTML
Designing web [GIS] applications using a model-view-controller web framework (Django)

This course is offered as a stand-alone course or as part of the graduate Certificate or Master of Science in Geo-Information Science at Salem State University.
· MA residents: $1,198.50 per three-credit course
· Non-MA residents: $1,468.50 per three-credit course
Students matriculated in the Master of Science program can qualify for graduate assistantships, financial aid and employer tuition remission or reimbursement among other options.
