Summary:
Coordinates the planning and implementation of Geographic Information System (GIS) support/spatial data acquisition, management and analysis for forest management activities on state reservations as defined by RSA 227-G2.

 

Responsibilities:
Creates and maintains a well-organized complex geodatabase that supports a productive work environment for staff. Constructs scripts in Python scripting language to automate complex GIS activities to enable bureau staff to accomplish specific tasks in the geodatabase.

Coordinates with DRED staff, and outside agencies where applicable, in the development of tools and data for program use. Sets and maintains standards for critical datasets such as stand typing. Creates composite datasets that allow for the analysis of bureau goals and objectives. Maintains database documentation.

Establishes and maintains a relationship with staff members in the effort to educate them on the use of geodatabases, routine GIS tasks, and approaches to developed workflow/timber sale planning. Sets-up periodic visits with staff members to aid them on current projects. Creates and maintains user manuals for the Forests and Lands GIS databases. Develops and conducts group staff training for GIS educational purposes as needed.

Assists Division of Forests and Lands staff in decision-making activities such as setting biennial forest management goals including acres of forest to be treated, timber volume to be harvested and acres to be regenerated. Assists in the development of state reservation management and strategic plans by providing GIS products from geodatabases including detailed maps and asset analyses.

Monitors and recommends GIS resources/systems, such as software and hardware purchases and upgrades, in the effort to improve future efficiencies, to improve datasets and tool functionality, or to update/enhance workflow efficiency.

Participates on the state-wide GIS committee and the State Lands Management Team. Provides technical GIS assistance pertaining to data acquisition, use and storage, mapping, and technical support to Division staff members and state partners, to include outside conservation organizations when applicable to project needs.

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university with major study in geography, forestry, environmental conservation, wildlife management or natural resources, with at least four (4) credit hours in a geographic information system course. Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience.

Experience: Three years' experience working with geographic information systems and managing databases, with responsibility for program planning, monitoring and evaluation. Each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.


License/Certification:
Valid New Hampshire driver's license.


SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Proficient in the use of ArcGIS products, spreadsheets and databases.
