Hi—

I’ve been tasked to come up with a numbering system for our drainage assets—catch basins, manholes, and the like.  At present, the City is not an MS4 community, but I suspect it is just a matter of time before we become one.  Are there requirements of how MS4 communities label their stormwater infrastructure? Are there best practices that you could suggest?

I am currently leaning toward a labelling convention that is numeric (no alpha), and consists of a prefix, a dash, and a suffix. The prefix will designate the outlet (or where the pipe daylights). The suffix will designate the asset number. Lower numbers will be closer to the outlet. Existing assets (including outlets) will be numbered in increments of 10 to allow flexibility.   (That way if a catch basin gets built between catch basin 10-10 and catch basin 10-20, I can label it 10-15).

I realize that this is more of a question about logic or policy as opposed to GIS. However, I imagine the GIS coordinators for other municipalities on this listserv have already dealt with this.

Allow me to thank you ahead of time for your help.
