I haven't encountered any issues like this, but I know a lot of people who have. Open Street Map would be a good place to start making changes, as some data reflected in Google, Bing etc draw from OSM.

Another, maybe more simplified approach just came to mind. Perhaps the solution lies in working with the adjacent community to renumber and rename the street to be consistent on both sides of the border. So long as this street isn't a through fare, this may be a good option. Unfortunately, trying to get through to Google/Apple maps is like shouting at a brick wall.

Best of luck,

Jay,

We run into this issue in Connecticut too. There are ways to trick the GIS data into working with street aliases, but the best solution would be for the two towns to get together and come up with a common street name and addressing for the street. Regardless of getting your Amazon Prime package on time, this is a serious 9-1-1 issue if First Responders cannot find the address.

Of course, getting a street renamed is near impossible most of the time, but it still is the best solution.

Subject: Getting data to major mapping platforms (from MassPlanners listserv)

Hello, all.

My wife forwarded me this message to see if I had any thoughts. I’ve had trouble with this in the past working for local governments, but maybe someone here has had better luck and can help Michelle out.

Reaching out to the community after failing in my many attempts to resolve an issue. Perhaps someone has a creative or tested solution?

There is a subdivision (in development) where the road spans two communities.  The name of the roadway is different in each community however all of the online mapping systems (Google, Yahoo, Bing, MapQuest, etc.) reflect only one street name.  In the world of online maps, digital directions, etc., it is IMPOSSIBLE to find the Randolph street through any search making life difficult for things like UPS, FedEx, etc.  I have "reported' the issue to all of the online map providers at least half-dozen times over the course of 3-6 months with zero effect following the only process I can find available:  on-line reporting.  I have included maps from the Town, my phone number, my email address and still, radio silence.

Anyone else run into a similar issue? Were you able to resolve it? If so, how?

Sincerely,

Michelle Tyler
