Dear Eric, Bob, Mara, Glenn, Scott, Binod, Tripp, Adam, Brett, and everyone, Thank you for all the help, and for responding so quickly! Scott and others suggested just rebuilding the map, by copying and pasting layers into a new map....that worked, and was so much easier than I anticipated! It is wonderful for someone like me, who just tried to teach herself ArcGIS (with the help of a couple of ESRI classes), to be able to get advise so quickly from experts. I don't know what the dots were, but I'm glad they are gone. LIke measles.
