I would add that it would be advantageous to zoom in on your historic map
in ArcMap or something first, to determine an appropriate limit for how
close you can zoom before it becomes useless.  If you decide it's safer to
just set that limit as a really large scale so you don't run into your
problem, you might get more than you bargained for on the file size, which
increases exponentially.
