Duties & Responsibilities: 

 

The Transportation Planner should be willing to work in a fast-paced office environment, where it is necessary to work on multiple task/projects simultaneously and interact professionally with staff, other agencies, and the public.   

 

The individual will serve as part of a team of Highway Safety specialists which is made up of highway safety engineers and planners and will focus on the geographic information system (GIS) aspect of crash and other safety related data.  The work entails creating or maintaining spatial databases, creating or maintaining web pages, creating or updating maps, performing spatial analyses, processing data requests, and providing assistance to the Traffic and Safety Engineering Section. 

 

The individual will also liaise with and handle technical questions from other MassDOT staff, metropolitan planning organizations, other Massachusetts agencies, and the general public regarding the use of the new IMPACT crash portal, a GIS-based software tool used to query, visualize and extract crash data (https://apps.impact.dot.state.ma.us/cdp/home).   This also includes conducting custom designed training sessions with key MassDOT staff as needed.  The individual will be required to facilitate meetings and make presentations using data prepared.

 

Other related duties will also be assigned as required.

 

This position requires proficiency in writing, making public presentations, and using all Microsoft Office software and ArcGIS 10.5 or higher.  Applicants should also demonstrate professionalism in handling requests.  A working knowledge of computing hardware (including, but not limited to printers, plotter, scanners, LCD projectors) is essential.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

 

Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional or technical experience in urban planning, regional planning, land use planning or transportation planning, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.

 

Substitutions:

 

I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in urban or regional planning or transportation, civil or environmental engineering may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*

 

II. A Graduate degree with a major in urban or regional planning or transportation, civil or environmental engineering may be substituted for the required experience.*

 

*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

 

Special Requirement:

 

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.

 

For Non-MassDOT Applicants: Applicants for this position must possess a Bachelor’s Degree, or higher, in urban or regional planning, transportation, civil or environmental engineering for this position.

 

For MassDOT Employees: Applicants for this position must possess a Bachelor’s Degree, or higher, in urban or regional planning, transportation, civil or environmental engineering for this position, or hold a position in the department in the next lower title than the position applied for, in the same or similar career ladder.
