Dear CT GIS Network,

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join in celebrating GIS Day at Yale University. If you review the program, it was carefully scheduled to avoid any overlapping with our CT GIS Network GIS Day.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT, KEYNOTE & RECEPTION

I want to bring to your attention the lecture taking place on Wednesday, Nov 13, 4:30 pm. The keynote speaker, Deirdre Bishop, is the Chief of the Geography Division of the US Census Bureau. She leads a team of 200 employees, who have been tirelessly preparing for Census 2020 data collection. While we cannot impact the Census 2020 questionnaire that is already designed, we all can share our perspective during Q&A and the reception. I imagine Deirdre will have numerous meetings from now until the Census 2020 happens, and after that, when they will be processing the data and creating products to share the data. Any feedback she hears may impact the way she leads their efforts. Feel free to invite everyone in your organization; the auditorium holds many attendees.

THURSDAY, WORKSHOPS

We want to make sure you know the workshops are open for guests, as well. There are a few workshops that may not be suitable without an active Yale login. The workshop webpage includes those details, as well as the Eventbrite registration. You could still attend (with registration) but might need to observe (unless your laptop has the required software).

FRIDAY, SPEAKERS AND CELEBRATIONS

·       Professor Ben Kiernan will present his work in the Cambodian Genocide. He has devoted decades of his career to this terrible episode in history.

·       Alfredo Herrera, GIS Analyst with the City of New Haven, will present his lecture “Transforming Decision-making through the Power of Spatial Thinking

·       Lightning Talks: Everyone is welcome to submit an entry for a 3-min talk.

·       Women in GIS Panel: Our very own Cary Chadwick will be one of the outstanding panelists!

·       Professor Walter Jetz: Besides other titles, he is the Scientific Chair of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation. He will be presenting the significant spatial data production for the Half-Earth Project.

·       and of course, we will have a GIS Day Cake and a Mappy Hour, as well as breakfast and lunch.

We sincerely hope you can make it,

Miriam, on behalf of the GISday Conference at Yale Committee
