Dear international students and scholars,

A growing number of students have reported to ISSS that they have been contacted or victimized by scammers. The scammers will try to get money from you or personal information. They pretend to be government officials from either U.S. or foreign country governments (often your home country) and they use threats and intimidation to scare you, or they provide you with convincing information to make you think they are real.

Please be advised that the government will not call you. This is a sign that the person is not who they say they are. Hang up the phone if you are called by someone pretending to be from the U.S. or your home country government.

Other “red flags” to watch out for–

-If they tell you to keep your conversation secret

-If they accuse you of a crime or action that you did not do

-If they ask you to provide any money or personal information

-If they harass you (frequently call or contact you)

-If they offer you money

-If they are frightening or threatening

Do not communicate with these individuals, and do not provide any money. Visit to ISSS for further information on what to do, and who to report to, if you have been contacted by scammers. Visit the ISSS webpage on Legal and Safety Resources for further information.
