Good Afternoon,

I’d like to share a unique opportunity for CT middle and high school students. The 2020 CT Maps Competition is an opportunity for students in grades 4-12 to showcase a project or idea by authoring an Esri storymap or ArcGIS Online web map. Student entries will be judged by a panel of GIS professionals and the top 5 entries from each division (middle school & high school) will be selected. Cash prizes will be awarded to these participants. The top winner from each division will then go on to compete nationally in Esri’s 2020 ArcGIS US School Competition. One middle school and one high school winner will be selected by Esri and will be given the opportunity to present their storymap/map at the 2020 Esri Education Summit in San Diego in July (expenses paid!). That’s a very big deal.

Check out some of the important deadlines below and visit the CT Maps Competition webpage on the CT GIS Network site to learn more and see last year’s winning story maps. Note, all entries must be created using an ArcGIS Online Organization account. Schools or educators can register for a FREE account through Esri’s ArcGIS for Schools Bundle. Every K12 public, private, home school and youth-serving club is eligible.

Registration deadline: March 20, 2020 (for teachers and schools. Register to let us know you plan to participate and indicate if you need additional technical guidance)
Submission deadline: May 8, 2020 (student projects must be submitted to the CT Leadership Team for judging)
State winners announced: May 18, 2020
National winners announced by Esri: first week of June, 2020
Esri Education Summit: July 11-14, 2020, San Diego, CA

If you are a middle or high school student, a teacher, a school administrator, a parent or an advocate for any of those important positions, please take a minute to learn more about this fun contest. If you would like to be part of the CT Leadership Team and help judge student entries, please let me. I’ll be putting a small panel together this spring.

Thanks for your attention and please pass this announcement along to any interested parties. The attached flyer would look great on bulletin boards!
