Hi Meghan,
A fun question indeed, and an amble down Memory Lane...

I began working with workstation ARC/INFO, with coverages, as a GIS Intern for the Westchester County Planning Department, in June, 1990. Westchester County was one of the earliest adopters of ESRI GIS, on the East Coast, by a local/regional government. I worked for Sam Wear, who recently retired(? - I think??). I was there until January 2002, when I took my present job in Greenwich, CT.

We worked on IBM RISC RS-6000 Workstations, in the AIX (IBM Unix) operating system. Back then, the Arc/Info programming language was AML - Arc Macro Language. Even getting a map off an (electrostatic?) plotter, involved some command-line language in ArcPlot.

We also got involved with ArcView/Windows, pretty early on, but it was tough "toggling" between the two environments. While PC Arc/Info - ArcView became easier to work with than the workstation platform, there were definitely teething pains. I still have a stack of notebooks, basically useless, except for a laugh, on "how-to" accomplish various tasks.

Long time ago, for sure, and I still have a ways to go, until retirement!!
Cheers,
Greg

Fun question, but definitely shows my age!

I first began using ARC/INFO around 1991 in a consulting firm in Virginia. It was command line driven (no windows). We had to write code using ARC Macro Language to generate maps. It was fun but also frustrating; especially if you became stuck in an endless loop!

I'm curious, when did people in CT start getting hired for GIS positions outside of academia? Not the engineer or zoning officer who obtained GIS skills, but the earliest positions where the job role was just to know GIS software as a desktop product? I was hired as a GIS intern in 2003 so I'm aging myself here but there were already people working in the field and there were consulting firms that existed to support them.

And to set a line in the sand, I'm going to use Wikipedia and say that "In 1986, Mapping Display and Analysis System (MIDAS), the first desktop GIS product [15]<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FGeographic_information_system%23cite_note-15&data=02%7C01%7CCTGIS-L%40LISTSERV.UCONN.EDU%7Cc939d556f8734f58219c08d860b1344b%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C0%7C637365661499772777&sdata=EY5VPH7G4U%2BpseIgRkmyiNtG0YVmTLrZlIOQGUdroco%3D&reserved=0> was released for the DOS<https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2FDOS&data=02%7C01%7CCTGIS-L%40LISTSERV.UCONN.EDU%7Cc939d556f8734f58219c08d860b1344b%7C17f1a87e2a254eaab9df9d439034b080%7C0%7C1%7C637365661499772777&sdata=Tk55KxP5BOChap5x43vcZ8ptxVTSahZkcdx61wEg3ds%3D&reserved=0> operating system. This began the process of moving GIS from the research department into the business environment." ArcView 1.0 was released in 1991 and shapefiles weren't a thing until ArcView 2.

So, in CT, where did it begin?
