Two virtual workshops will be offered on the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS). The first workshop will provide a general overview of the data and its applicability, while the second workshop will be focused on technical usability aspects for end users.

Both workshops are meant to familiarize a variety of decision makers, coastal planners, and engineers with the study and a few key derived data products.

Session 1 - NACCS overview: Informing coastal decisions in the Northeast
A

of the NACCS and how it can be applied to coastal management in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. You will learn:
About the NACCS study, including goals, approach, and outputs
Where to access the data
Differences between NACCS and other similar datasets, including the strengths and limitations
Case studies highlighting where and how NACCS is being used locally

October 21, 2020, Wednesday | 10am - 11am Eastern Time
Who should attend? Coastal management professionals interested in using NACCS to inform their work. This session will be appropriate for both non-technical and technical audiences. Audiences planning on attending the technical session are encouraged to attend Session 1.
Session 2 - NACCS technical session: Understanding what’s under the hood
Building on Session 1- NACCS overview offered on Oct. 21st, this more in-depth session will explore the technical components of NACCS. The technical session will cover the numerical modeling approach, statistics, and the accessibility through different databases and Application Programming Interface (API). You will learn:
How to use different methods to access the datasets (geodatabase/API)
How to include sea level rise and dynamic tides
Storm basics and track conditions, synthetic tropical storms and extratropical storms
Statistical methodology used in NACCS modeling and outputs (save points and events)
This session will be interactive! Come prepared to get data from the geodatabase, and present water level using GIS.
When? Session 2 will be offered twice to provide flexibility in scheduling:

Who should attend? Technical users who will access NACCS data and use it to perform further analysis. Attendees should have attended Session 1 to ensure they come to this session having basic background knowledge of NACCS.
What is NACCS? The North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS) addresses coastal storm and flood risk in the North Atlantic region. Completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2015 in response to Hurricane Sandy, the study was designed to:
Help local communities better understand changing flood risks associated with climate change
Provide tools to prepare for future flood risks that can be customized for any coastal watershed
The Northeast Regional Ocean Council (NROC) worked with RPS to make a valuable subset of the NACCS data accessible to modelers and decision makers in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic (funded by a USFWS North Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative (LCC) and NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management).
