Please join the Maine GIS User Group (MEGUG) Tuesday October 13th at noon as we welcome Dr. Meghan May PhD of The University of New England for a virtual lunch & learn event!

Professor May will present a talk entitled: Clinical and Epidemiological Insights into the COVID-19 Pandemic from Geospatial Science The novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 virus causes the multi-system illness COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), and was first detected in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. COVID-19 cases rose to epidemic proportions in Eastern China in December 2019, and expanded into a global pandemic in the early months of 2020. Emerging disease epidemics are often characterized at first by a paucity of information about the disease course, transmission dynamics, and basic biology of the novel pathogens, and discoveries frequently come from additional disciplines outside of clinical medicine. In this webinar, clinical and epidemiological insights into the COVID-19 pandemic stemming from geospatial sciences will be discussed.

About the speaker:

Dr. Meghan May, Professor of Biomedical Sciences (Microbiology and Infectious Disease)
Dr. May was appointed in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of New England College of Medicine in 2013. She was previously appointed in the Department of Biological Sciences at Towson University from 2010-2013 (holding the Fisher Endowed Chair of Biological Sciences from 2012-2013) and was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow and then a research assistant professor in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Pathology at the University of Florida's Emerging Pathogens Institute. Dr. May earned her B.S. degree in Microbiology from the University of New Hampshire, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Pathobiology and Bacteriology (respectively) from the University of Connecticut. Her research focus is on pathogen evolution and emerging diseases, and involves bacteria, parasites, and viruses. She also studies the role in the microbiome in protecting against infection, pharmaceutically-induced immune dysregulation and infection susceptibility, infection-mediated pain, and works up unusual clinical ID cases involving novel infectious agents.
