Similar to Neil’s reply, at Marist (just down the road!) I use mostly home-cooked exercises.
The only required text is Mark Monmonier’s “How to Lie with Maps”. I like it because it’s completely software agnostic, and it covers a lot of ground I’m not able to cover in-class.
It’s inexpensive, and it’s a short 200 pages. Both of which appeal to the students.
Last semester I had an optional text – Kurt Menke’s “Discover QGIS 3.x”, as we had to be prepared to go fully virtual if need be.
Prior years I’ve used the “Getting to Know” books as optional texts.
These are optional because I do not use any of the exercises in class. But some students might want to take a deeper dive into the technical aspects of the software on their own.

At Vassar we've been using the opposite approach, going with academic textbooks and other readings with mostly home-cooked exercises. When I taught at U. of New Haven though we used the "Getting to Know..." books for the intro class and that worked fine.

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone have any recommendation about a textbook for GIS/ArcGIS Pro. I have been developing the reading material and exercises for my classes given the amount of online information and articles, but I would love to hear other's experience with a textbook.

Thank you in advance,
marcia
