Hi Paula,
You might want  try the Cut Polygons Tool on the Editor Toolbar. You can enable snapping if you need to reference your cut to a specific feature. This cannot be batched however, so if you have alot of doughnuts it may not be useful.

Correction on my last email as I misunderstood your initial request. No, clip would not work, that would be for creating the hole itself, not slicing the donut. My apologies.

Good Afternoon,

I am using ArcGIS Desktop 10.5. I have a polygon feature class of hydrography that contains ‘donuts’ or holes in some of the features (mostly due to islands on the waterways).  I need to split/cut the polygons at these ‘donuts’ due to the requirements of our scheduling software’s map functionality. I am having a difficult time figuring out which tool to use (I am not versed in advanced editing) and have checked GIS Stack Exchange and other sources.

I did find a split donuts tool using Python on Git Hub but I can’t figure out how to run it.  Here is the diagram from GitHub by fgassert, it definitely looks like what I need to do, but I don’t understand how to make it work.

If anyone knows which tool or combination of tools I need to use, I would greatly appreciate some guidance. I have a 6 county area to work on so trying to identify and split each feature by hand would be problematic.

Thanks in advance, Paula
