Thank you to everyone who responded to my request with suggested tools and offers to check out the python script from GitHub; the NEARC community is so supportive and encouraging.

The most popular response was to use the 'Cut Polygon Tool', which would work great for doing one feature at a time.

In the end, it was Andrew Mitchell's suggestion to use Global Mapper's 'Chop/Combine/Split' tool which has the option to 'chop up the area to remove islands'. This allowed for all the features to be processed at once and worked perfectly. Thank you Andrew!

Subject: Split/cut polygon containing donut

Good Afternoon,

I am using ArcGIS Desktop 10.5. I have a polygon feature class of hydrography that contains 'donuts' or holes in some of the features (mostly due to islands on the waterways). I need to split/cut the polygons at these 'donuts' due to the requirements of our scheduling software's map functionality. I am having a difficult time figuring out which tool to use (I am not versed in advanced editing) and have checked GIS Stack Exchange and other sources.

I did find a split donuts tool using Python on Git Hub but I can't figure out how to run it. Here is the diagram from GitHub by fgassert, it definitely looks like what I need to do, but I don't understand how to make it work.

If anyone knows which tool or combination of tools I need to use, I would greatly appreciate some guidance. I have a 6 county area to work on so trying to identify and split each feature by hand would be problematic.

Thanks in advance, Paula
