We recently upgraded our production desktop environment to 10.8.1 from 10.3. Two issues we encountered were some of our python scripts stopped working and our Data Reviewer batch files did as well. These were easy fixes. We had to install some
updated python libraries/modules to new versions. Not too hard to do once we identified which ones needed updating. The Data Reviewer check required some updated to query syntax and updating data sources within the checks. Overall it was a pretty easy upgrade.
I have heard that 10.8.x will be the last version of ArcGIS Desktop (ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcScene, and ArcGlobe) that Esri will release. The next versions of ArcGIS will only include ArcGIS Enterprise and associated components, extensions, and apps. Esri
will continue to support ArcGIS Desktop through 2026 or 2027. At least that is what I have heard through my network. I have not officially verified this so keep that in mind though it has come to me through what I consider reliable channels.
With all this, it might be time to start looking to migrate to ArcGIS Pro. It has grown a lot since its first release in 2015. I am currently beta testing the new 2.8 version and so far it is looking pretty good. Just a thought.
